Somewhat obscure movies you might not have seen but probably have. But if you haven't, you should.

By Tony F. Rezac

Introduction!
I understand that some, if not most of these films are not obscure; some are even very well remembered and popular. But, I don't hear them being talked about, or see them being watched nearly as much as they deserve, so in that way they are forgotten and I hope to bring them back into the limelight.

Flatliners: With this star studded cast no one is fooled into believing this is obscure in the least, but it was released in 1990, so its possible some readers of AH may not have seen it. Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platz, Kevin Bacon, and Billie Baldwin star in this physiological thriller that deals with life after death.

The Last Castle: When Robert Redford is in a movie you know its going to be good, and this jail house drama is no exception.

PCU: A staple of the Comedy Central weekday morning movie. Usually on at odd times so I'm sure all of us have seen at least parts of this one. Jeremy Pivon stars in your typical college house party movie. But this one is actually pretty funny.

Scrooged: Bill Murray stars in the 1988 adaptation of Charles Dickens a Christmas Carol. It takes place in a TV studio where Murray is a surly executive who makes the cast work on Christmas. Hilarity ensues.

Willow: Midgets, Val Kilmer and witches hell bent on taking over the world who wouldn't enjoy that? It’s Lord of the Rings with a humorous, if not more entertaining twist.

Star Wars: Clone Wars (1 and 2): These animated one hour blocks made by Cartoon Network do a brilliant job bridging Episode II, The Attack of the Clones and Episode III, Revenge of the Sith. If you find yourself at all confused to what is happening in the beginning of Episode III, check these out.

Mulan: I know, Disney movies are never obscure, but this one is probably, at least over the past 15 years or so, the least known. Very well made, and Eddie Murphy is a pretty funny guy.

Airheads: Again not all that obscure, but people fail to remember that this is easily Adam Sandler’s best movie.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape: A young Johnny Depp plays a small Iowa grocery store stock boy. Leo plays a retard, and they have an insanely obese mother. What’s not to love?

The Fifth Element: Made at a time when Sci-Fi was considered old hat and lame, this action packed Bruce Willis film delivers mile a minute thrills with some well placed laughs. It doesn't take itself too seriously which is the problem of most Sci-Fi fantasies, it just tries to entertain, which it does fabulously. And I'll just go right out and say it. Bruce Willis is hands down the best action star of all time.

1941: Dan Akroyd and John Belushi star in this satirical film about the terror and insanity war can instill in people.

The X Files Movie, Fight the Future: The film is basically a 2 hour long episode of the show of the same name. Being a huge fan of the show helps, but if you aren't you can still enjoy the movie.

It’s a Wonderful Life: Not obscure at all, but quite possibly the pinnicle of cinematic achievement. I absolutely love this movie.

That’s all I have time for tonight maybe I'll have write up another list some other day. Hopefully I've helped someone out next time they are wondering what movie to rent.

Flatliners sounds like a good one I haven't seen.

I should watch Willow again, isn't it really long? like 5-6 hrs?

Chris Tucker has such a weird part in the fifth element. he makes me laugh.

Best of the list = PCU or X-files.

I like Scrooged, probably because I'm a big Bill Murray fan, but I think Charles Dickens would roll over in his grave if he saw it.

Wasnt The 5th Element one of the biggest bombs in movie history? Either that or it was bashed by critics.

Not that this was one of your movies but when you talked about action hero's I thought about it. Today I read how Jakie Chan just made a statement about how he hates all of this Rush Hour movies and only did the last two for the money. I thought that was hillarious, how bad is your movie if your leading star hates it?

yeah, bill murray is hilarious.

I don't remember if the 5th element bombed or not, but i have a feeling that it cost a lot of money to make, so it probably had very high expectations that weren't met. it's a very good movie - overplayed on cable.

worst of list: PCU

believe it or not, i'm sick of college movies. and they all have the tagline 'this movie is Animal house for the next generation"

Im pretty sure I saw PCU before Animal House so that tagline rings true for me. No disrespect to jon belushi but honestly i dont think animal house is that funny.

also, there are way better action heros than bruce willis. hello?ever heard of The Rock?

Willow really has some great lines. In high school my friends would always call dumb people "stupid dikinis"

as in: "you stupid dikini. I stole the baby while you were in the pee pee."

just great stuff

People fail to remember that Airheads is Adam Sandler's best movie? You are kidding right?
