'This One Time, At Band Camp'

By Tony F. Rezac

That damn phrase from American Pie was so over used by our generations during our younger more naive days, that it rivaled "knock-knock" as the start to the most jokes.

About a month ago I watched Van Wilder for the first time in a couple years and I was very disappointed. But I wasn't worried because it was on in the background and I wasn't paying close attention to it. Then, I received a care package full of movies, and one of those movies happened to be "American Pie." Logically I was excited because I remembered this movie to be absolutely hilarious the last time I saw it - which was about 5 years ago. I took a moment to think after I was finished watching it, and I was shocked when I realized that I did not laugh one time. Have we grown up so quickly that the "childish" humor demonstrated in those kind of films has lost all of it's appeal? Have fart jokes and tits become an old hat? Or is there some bigger problem with teen comedies today? Let’s discuss further, shall we?

How will "teen angst" movies of our generation be remembered? Not well, I'm afraid. American Pie, Van Wilder, Can't Hardly Wait, She's All That, the list goes on and on. They all suck, they were all cookie cutter scripts, starring some dude you never saw again and some good looking broad that ended up in rehab. They offer up some cheap laughs for sure, but once you watch it once you've seen it one time too many. How is it that I can relate more to movies that were made before I knew what foreplay meant or what a joint was, but I can't even sit through movies that were made specifically for my demographic?
I know the 80's were the golden age, when the brat pack ruled the roost, for teen drama and comedy. But the 70's released some pretty good movies with staying power also. Most happen to star John Travolta but they are still good movies - Grease, Saturday Night Fever, American Graffiti just to name a few.
Is the acting pool shallower than ever before? Or is it that the crop of writers in Hollywood has dried up? When I say the acting pool is shallow, I only need to mention one name Tara Reid, she was smokin' hot in both American Pie and Van Wilder. But anyone who caught her show on E! "Taradise" knows what I'm talking about. And its obvious writers are plain running out of ideas - when was the last time an original idea became a blockbuster? Everything is a re-make, or an adaptation from a book or tv.

I hate how the one great movie about teenage life made in the 90's, takes place in the 70's, "Dazed and Confused."
If I'm wrong here please comment and tell me, I have racked my brain trying to think of more good movies from our generation, and I can't come up with one. And the internet is no help, when I search for teen movies or anything along those lines all that pops up is porno. Which is nice, but not what I'm looking for.

Van Wilder is a terrible movie. If you disagree, you probably haven't seen it for a couple of years. And Tara Reid is a dreadful actress.

Not Just Another Teen Movie is funny.

Not Another Teen Movie is very good, but only because it makes fun of all the movies that tony was referring to.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is a disturbing murder mistery film that takes place in a highschool setting and revolves around highschoolers. That movie is outstanding. Other than that and Dazed and Confused, I'm out of ideas.

The Stoned Age would be another film that was great when we watched it in highschool, but I have a bad feeling about how much it would suck if i watched it again.

I haven't seen American Pie for a few years but I still think Stiffler is funny. What happened to him? Last time I saw him he co-stared with The Rock in some action movie.

The stoned age does suck wooter, I'm sorry to say. Don't watch it again, only remember it for it's shitty catch phrases like "Just some dude".

Does Ferris Beuller's Day Off count as a 'teen' movie? There's not much booze or sex, but the kids are smart and funny while the adults are clueless idiots, which is a staple of teen movie plots.

How about Animal House?

Both of these have stood up pretty well over time.

Jim, its good to have you. Yes, they are wonderful movies. I can relate to Ferris because I used to skip school for twins games. And you can't not like Animal House.

Bres, Stiffler just made some shitty movie with Billy Bob Thorton that no one will ever see.

what about fast times, we have to give some credit to that movie, seeing that our name is a direct quote from the movie.

I did hate how it just ended and they did the still shots of everyone as the explained what happened to them. It seemed rushed.

Thoughts?

Fast times was one of my favorite movies of all time when I got it for christmas in eighth grade...it's been awhile since i've seen it, but i would put it up there

I'll buck the trend a little, I still like Van Wilder. I watched it recently and still thought it was funny, just not as hillarious as it was when I was freshmen in college and watched it twice a week. I think I still find it to be decent because Ive seen about 10 National Lampoon movies since and everyone has been so horrible I've turned off half of them before they were even finished making Van Wilder look like Casablanca in comparison. That reference is a bad one because I hated Casablanca, but you get the idea.

Animal House is a classic and has its great moments, but all in all I've always thought it was over-rated. Im sure for its time and place it was awesome though.

Oh man Twinsfan, don't even get me started on how far national lampoons has fallen. I think the contributors to AH could make a better movie than that bunch of no talent hacks.

Ferris Beuller's day off will always be great. "ROONEY!" (awesome!)

Does Caddyshack count? that is good.

Jim Carrey movies werent really "teen movies", but made us teens laugh endlessly.

Tara Reed's best movie by far, was "The Big Lebowski". She fits that character well, and we didn't even have to see her that much.

Stiffler's best movie was "Road Trip", and that movie still makes me laugh alot.

As far as 80's classics go, there are many. none better than our namesake, "Fast Times at Ridgemount High".

twinswin, the movies are bad. face it.

a couple teen type movies our generation can hang their hats on:

Wet Hot American Summer
Super Troopers

...boy, I guess that's it for now

How did I forget Wet Hot American Summer?!

Yes, Soup. That movie is hilarious. If you haven't seen Wet Hot American Summer, I highly suggest you rent it.

and how the hell did all of us forget to Napolean Dynamite?

Geez.

You know, I'd be inclined to suggest Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back as a movie of note. It contains ALL low brow humor, yet I still enjoy it to this day.
