Wait And See?

By M. Haas

Sure, on the surface the trade doesn't look as great as it could have been. And it's certainly sad to see the best pitcher in baseball leave Minnesota. But who's gotta new ballpark sittin' in their backyard? Oh yeah, the Mets are getting a new ballpark too.

Right now, all we can do is curse Carl Pohlad (dammit) and the Way Baseball Works (dammit) and look ahead to the future. Which happens to include these four new additions to the organization, described in layman's terms:

Carlos Gomez, CF - He played in twenty-some games for the Mets last year after beginning the season in single A. Maybe he'll start in center this year for the Twins. He's supposed to be good, better than Jake Ellsbury, according to some scouts. He can steal bases, throw out runners and maybe even hit some bombs. He'll be like a Grady Sizemore if we're lucky.

Phil Humber, P, 25 years old - He was the third overall pick a long time ago, he had become only a projected 3 or 4 starter (not an ace) by the time he had Tommy John surgery. (just like Fransisco Liriano's surgery) That was two years ago. So expect him to compete for a starting pitching job this season, but don't expect anything spectacular.

Deolis Guerra, P, 19 years old - This young kid is all projection right now. He won't have a shot at the club for at least another couple of years, but should be able to throw hard with a pretty good changeup. Watch for his name in the new stadium.

Kevin Mulvey, P, 22 years old - He could be alright. Mixes four pitches (not at once.) He could be anywhere between the number 4 starter for the Twins to the number 3 starter for the Red Wings.

Let's treat these guys as our own, give them nicknames and cheer their development. It might be fun. Certainly more fun that deriding Billy Smith if they're not living up to expectations and the Twins aren't competitive in 2010. And deride him we will.

In all seriousness Haas this blog entry is going to be better than all the “real” journalistic stories that come out in the papers tomorrow. I know it didn’t take you long, but nice job me boy

Live with it or get over it quick, just dont act like it was any sort of a good move at all!

Good work Haas. I agree. "The future is ours!"
Anonymous: Haas' take is realistic. It still doesn't sound that great. He just told you what we have to look foward to from these guys. Save your nay-saying for after you see that it's a bust.

Haas,
Don't listen to anonymous he's a dumbass. Something tells me Bill Smith and the Twins scouts know a bit more then anonymous, just a hunch. I think it will turn out to be an ok trade. Gomez will be really fun to watch, even as he's developing and the other pitchers will turn out to be quality major league pitchers. We were never going to get what he was worth in return but I think the Twins know what they are doing and we have no reason from the past not to trust them. The new Twins will be really fun to watch and grow.

HOMERS(clap clap)HOMERS(clap clap) HOMERS(clap clap).........I just cant understand how none of you can take a realistic approach! and just admit that by the Twins trading Santana, the best pitcher in MLB and will continue to be for years was traded to the mets for who?? 4 no name, no talented sallys who have proven what in MLB? This is the all time steal of a trade for the mets and in MLB history. The Twins just made the biggest joke of a trade that has ever existed in baseball and all any of you can say is "The new Twins will be really fun to watch and grow." HAHAHAHAHA what kind of pills are you on Pills?!!! GET OVER IT! YOUR TEAMS TERRIBLE!

AS of Friday we will have Bill Smith, this was Terry Ryan's defacto last deal, Smith was just the messenger holding the bag. None of the offers were value for value.

From what I've read Mulvey is a right handed Lester minus the health history. Ellsbury & Gomez have had similar minor league numbers, Ellsbury happened to be hot in his callup and frankly your mom might be able to hit in that line up! Everyone & their brother has drooled on Hughes, then to see him go straight to the DL. Any one of these deals could be shredded and I'm sure will be, the bottome line is we offered Johan $113.5M for 6 years & he said "No." What can you do?
