The Santana Clause

I think most of us were hoping there was going to be some bigger news at this point and we couls start speculating next years lineup, but it looks like the Santana Trade options with the Yankees have slowed down, possibly to a complete stop.

Hank is saying as far as any deal with the Yankee's "It's probably off".

Here is a quick question, if the Yankees are the Evil Empire, doe that make George Steinbrenner, Darth Vader? And then would that make Hank Steinbrenner, Darth Vader's son? Thus making him Luke Skywalker? Sorry, the picture of the day had me thinking about Star Wars. But I digress.

However, from what I can find on the interwebs it looks like a Red Sox deal is more likely. Curt Shilling badly wants Johan for the Red Sox, can you blame him?

The Boston Globe reported Twins and Boston ended their talks last night around 2am ET, but that a deal appears "close". According to the source it looks like the deal would be, pitcher Jon Lester, center fielder Coco Crisp, pitcher Justin Masterson and infielder Jed Lowrie.

Jayson Stark and La Velle E. Neal III have the same list of players so this is looking like it might be true.

Not a horrible trade but still not what I was looking for. Essentially I want nothing to do with Coco. But that's just my opinion what's yours?

Yeah dude. I dont think Coco is the answer. Ellsbury would be great but we arent going to get both him and Lester and I think its important for the Twins to get atleast one pitcher who can contribute right away out of whatever deal they decide to make.

I keep hearing how great Phil Hughes is going to be and as much as Id hate to see Johan in pinstripes that might be our best option, along with Melkey. Was it Caple who said that aside from Seattle throwing Felix Hernandez at us there isnt a better pitching prospect in the world next to Hughes?

I'm not sure of my take on this one, I would rather have Hughes and who ever else we could get with him from the Yankees.

I am of a differing opinion. I think Coco would be a very good fit for the Twins. Before he went to boston and got hurt he was one of the best CF in baseball and used to kill the Twins as an Indian. He is really good definsively and hopefully a change of scenery could get him back to his old self. I am not sold on Jacoby. I think he has been greatly overrated because of his success in the WS. He is a good on base guy who will steal bases but the Twins produce lots of guys like that. I agree that Hughes is alot better then Lester but Lester will be very good and would help lighten the loss of Garza and Santana. Lowrie and Masterson are very good young players as well and could help fill the Twins holes. Lowrie could start the year as the everyday SS or 2B. Masterson looks to be a year away but is thought of being a #3 starter or there is talk that he could be molded to take over as the closer in 2009. It will be interesting to see how this develops. I think something will get done and it wouldn't surprise me if it was the Angels now that it looks like they may lose out on fat Miggy. They could give us Kendrick, Wood and a young MLB ready starter(maybe Santana jr.? Ervin, even though he was garbage last year). I just hope it gets done and we can start looking forward to the revamped Twins in 2008. The new faces should excited as the old faces didnt get us much.

Old faces didnt get us much? common pills, where were you in 2006'?

I do agree with you though about Lester being a good pickup and Ellsbury being weak with the bat though. I dunno, I just hope something gets done soon cause all this speculation is getting to be too much.

Yeah 2006 was fun but how did we finish that year off? Correct me if I wrong but I believe Santana lost 2 games in that series and I guy by the name Torii had a costly mistake. They won some divisional titles but the team wasn't built for a playoff run. Not saying after the trades they are, cause they are not) but theyre taking steps by improving the lineup for the long haul. If the Tigers land Willis and Cabrera, as is mentioned in rumors, the central will be even better and Santana to the Sox may make it a good time to be rebuilding. Two other random thoughts I saw where the Royals were one of the front runners for Silva (at 4 year, 40+ million) moves like this will be why the Royals are the Royals and should insure the Twins atleast 5-10 more wins alone. 5 less loses and some more wins win facing him. Second thought is there is supposedly no interest in Andruw Jones, why not see if you cant sign him to a one or two year $12 mill a season plus incentive based contract. His a good hitter who cant be as bad as he was last year and should bounce back. Just a thought id welcome him to the Twins

quick update: santana is reportedly close to be traded for lester, crisp and a buncha bosox. we shall see.

also, the tigers are going to be really good next year.

Hopefully the Angels now officially out of Miggy stakes they will turn to Santana they have pieces that would be a much better fit for the Twins

Miggy is going to be a good pickup for the Tigers, the middle of their lineup is gonna be unreal but I dont think Willis will be much more than an average 3 or 4 starter for them. Im glad they dealt Andrew Miller cause now the Twins wont have to see him four or five times a year. He's going to be a stud and from the looks of last year probably sooner then later.

What does a 5.17ERA in the NL east translate into the AL central?

The tiger pitching staff has gone from pretty scary to mediocre in a hurry.

I don't know probably 14-15 wins.

If Willis wins 14 or 15 games next year it will have more to do with the Tigers offense then his pitching.
