Why I Hate the Boston Red Sox

by Mark Waters

It pains me to type the following sentence: I hate the Boston Red Sox.

I have a lot of relatives who live in the Boston area, so as a kid, I loved going to Fenway Park to root for my then favorite team. (sorry Twins Faithful, but from age Whenever-8 I was a bigger Sox fan.) The best part about flying out to Boston every summer was seeing the giant CITGO sign towering over Fenway.

In fact, up until a few years ago the Red Sox were the other team I cheered for every night, until they made the fatal error...becoming hypocrites.

Larry Lucchino (Red Sox CEO) is the man who coined the phrase "Evil Empire" when describing the New York Yankees. Boston GM, Theo Epstein, is a spokesman for that term, pissing it out of his mouth a number of times since its birth. All of you understand why the Yankees earned that title, obviously, but how are the Red Sox the "Little Engine that Could?"

Last time I checked, Boston's team salary is a minuscule $143,123,714. (2nd highest in Major League Baseball). 11 of their 14 highest paid players were bought via free agency. As most of you know, they spent 40 million dollars JUST TO TALK to Daisuke Matsuzaka.

I passionately hate the Yankees for their complete disregard to money management, but at least they aren't attempting to fool anybody. They know they are hated because of their spending. But whiny Lucchino dubbed these guys the Evil Empire, yet has now turned into what he so despised.

Darth Maul kept it real. He was evil from day one, realized this, and went about his day. But Anakin started out all "woah is me", hated the siths, but ultimately turned on everything he believed in and became what he hated.

So go ahead and enjoy that 2004 world series trophy, Theo & Co. You basically bought it on ebay. Hypocrites.

This post isn't breaking news of course, but my hatred has resurfaced due to the fact that it looks like its gonna be another Yankees/Red Sox vs the National League Allstar game in '07.

I couldn't agree more, I could go on an on about the BoSox/NY bias on SportsCenter and Baseball Tonight.

Or how the all-star game is constantly rigged with mediocre name recognition players from the Yanks or the Sox.

Or even how, after a successful first couple months, the Red Sox are walking around like they are the greatest team in baseball... Ever.

It was tolerable when the red sox still sucked even with spending a bunch of money. I'm a cubs fan but as soon as they stop sucking, I'll be done with them. The same was for the sox after 2004.

good piece. yeah i hate fans and teams who think theyre better than everyone.

the twins and their fans are so much better than all of them.

Dude, I'm its all relative considering the revenues brought in by yanks/sox compared to the twins. How do you think they should spend the money? Big market gets big money gets big names gets fans gets all star ballots. You should be used to this by now. If the twins had the money they would act the same way. This is exactly why it is so much fun to root for the twins. I like being the underdog.

so we can like the twins for those reasons but not hate the red sox?

just cuz we're used to it doesnt mean we're going to not hate them. just cuz "thats the way it works" doesnt mean we're not going to hate them. just cuz "we'd do the same thing if we had the money" doesnt mean waters cant bitch about them.

heres another reason to hate the red sox

hey, you can't do that!

Bres, why can't you just blindly agree with what we say.

First you are pro bonds now you are pro yankees/BoSox. I think there is a place for you as an ESPN executive.

Online voting has not helped in evenly disbursing who makes it into the allstar game. Especially since Ichiro received the most votes in the history of baseball the other year.

Selig will never bannish online voting, so it looks like we're stuck with it. Basketball gets it right. When the Lakers had their dynasty, the Western All-Star roster didn't have 5 lakers on the team, they had Kobe and Shaq, and thats completely acceptable.

As much as I enjoy the idea of having fans choose the starting line up, I also realize that there's too many uneducated, bias, stupid fans that are screwing things up with their 25 online votes a piece. Did you notice that Luis Castillo isn't even in 5th place in votes? He's hitting .337 and just broke a defensive major league record.

Nice link Haas. Boy oh boy, I hate the Red Sox.

I am a realist, they have the money so they spend it. I have never rooted for the Yankees or the Red Sox. The worst thing the BoSox have done in terms of baseball wide appeal is win the whole thing. They went from being the lovable losers who everyone wanted to see almost make it, or as FOX loved to refer to them as in the 2004 WS "the Anit-Yankees." To just another team that might compete for another title. they did a great job in '04 putting a team together that was in attitude at least, the "anti-yankees" but they did it the same way the real yankees have always done it, by throwing their pocket books around.

I just tend to find it rediculous that I can turn on Sports Center and have to watch a highlight of the Yankees in the first 2 minutes when they are 8 games under .500 and 14 games out of first place. As for the Red Sox, my theory is that the teams fans were more content when they were miserable and bickering about not winning a World Series title in 80 some odd years. Now that they have won it they are just babeling assholes like the rest of baseball fans on the east coast. The Twins represent what professional baseball is suppose to be like, building a successful team from within their own organization, through great trades and devolpment of minor league players and draft choices. Any way you look at it I f'in hate the Yankees and I f'in hate the Red Sox. No way around it.
