While I am probably the worst person to be writing a post about music, I thought all of you actual musicians would get a kick out of this. I am sure many of you know about Apple's music program Garage Band, and some of you might know about Microsoft's attempt to enter into consumer music producing business. It's called Songsmith (tm). And to give you an idea of what it's supposed to be used for I present you their (unintentionally) hilarious commercial.
So now that you know what it's supposed to be used for, I will present you with what it really has been used for.
Basically, people have taken the vocal tracks from famous songs and imported them in to Songsmith. Now in theory Songsmith should take these vocals and match them with awesome music. Let's see if that works out.
"Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor
"Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne
"Creep" by Radiohead
"White Wedding" by Billy Idol
And my favorite: "Wonderwall" by Oasis
Sorry I know this post is a little video-heavy, but I thought you might enjoy it. The techno Oasis song is already on my iPod.

HOLMER:
Wow! Wow. Whoa.
This is monumental. You mean to tell me that my life could be a musical, at all times?
I can't wait to see that guy in the coffee shop practicing his glo-in-the-dark towel jingle. Doesn't he just bring out the creativity of music and the art of the jingle?
Sweet lord.
I second all of Holmer's superlatives, but I would have to go with the Appalachian Accordion version of Crazy Train as my top choice.
I'm getting drunk off thinking about all of the moonshine that would need to be consumed to make it an original production.
ahhh.that commercial makes me want to shoot myself.
I think I like Eye of the Tiger better with soundsmith. I kinda want to start a polka band and plug songs into soundsmith just to get hilarious material for our band.
Someone has done Runnin With the Devil, right?
Haas,
My mom is a busy woman, but she does own an accordion and she can play the shit out of it. So, if you need an accordion player, I can make a call.
One more thought:
The screen shot of the songsmith commercial fits nicely into my stereotypical view of a Mac user. Mac users always find time to hang out in coffee shops, befriend baristas, and put stickers on their notebooks.
Soup,
One problem. this is by Microsoft not apple. So in theory they should be using a PC.
However, it is funny that they used a macbook pro in the commercial.
Also, I have a sticker on my laptop. But it's classy, its a monochromatic Twins logo.
I really want to put a bunch of pink and yellow stars on my laptop. Soundsmith looks like a lot of fun.
